Perched on the Millbank, Tate Britain is home to the national collection of art. A gentle walk away from the heart of Pimlico, Tate Britain is the oldest of the four Tate galleries and we think it’s the perfect place to find some solace and to feast the senses.
Housing over 500 year’s worth of British art, think Elizabethan portraits, to Victorian bohemia, to the latest contemporary sculpture, it’s not just a one time gig. Think of this institution as somewhere you can continually come back to, having engaged with different artworks each time.
The world-famous collection includes paintings from the like of David Hockney, Francis Bacon, Bridget Riley and Barabara Hepworth. Never heard of any of them? Fear not, Tate have a great guide to looking slow and offer audio guides which are accessible and informative, so you part with new knowledge and a new way of seeing.
The gallery also holds the world’s largest collection of works by JMW Turner, if old school Britain is more your bag. There’s plenty to get lost in, plus it’s worth noting these collections are free to the public.
Alongside their permanent collection, Tate Britain offer a host of workshops and a dazzling programme of major exhibitions. British Baroque is next on the list and we have our eye on the curator’s tour on March 27th. There’s also an experimental evening of electronic music inspired by the British Baroque exhibit, a little something for everyone we think.
